Governor William Owsley
Historic Waller-Owsley House
This fantastic historic house was built c1813 by William Waller facing Main Street in Frankfort, KY. Over the years it has served as home to the Bank of the Commonwealth, Dr. Prescot Brown and Kentucky Court of Appeals Chief Justice Thomas A. Marshall, but it is most noted as home to Governor William Owsley who lived here from 1835 until moving to Garrard County and his beloved Pleasant Retreat in 1848.
Nearly lost to fire in 1999 that gutted most of the structure, but thankfully the house was saved by the Kentucky Trust, our very first project, and a complete rehabilitation was conducted by the current owners and completed in 2013 in time for the building's 200th anniversary. Many historic elements that survived the fire like the parlor fireplace mantle now enhance a neatly appointed office space.
Today the building survives as one of the oldest structures in the downtown Business District and provides a rare opportunity for sizable commercial space or a possible private residence in the heart of downtown.
